Biography

Mario Cozzolino, is an Associate Professor of Nephrology and the Chair of Nephrology at the School of Medicine, University of Milan, Italy. He is Director of the Renal Division at San Paolo Hospital, Milan, Italy, and the Director of the Laboratory of Experimental Nephrology at the Department of Health Sciences, University of Milan, Italy.
In 2013, he was recognised as a Distinguished Fellow of the European Renal Association and in 2017 he became Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology.

From 1999 to 2002 he was a Research Assistant in the Vitamin D Laboratory, Renal Division, Department of Internal Medicine, School of Medicine at Washington University, St. Louis, MO – USA under Director Eduardo Slatopolsky, MD.
He is also Chairman of the CKD-MBD working group of the European Society of Nephrology (ERA-EDTA).
He has organised several congresses and meetings in the area of mineral metabolism and renal disease. His areas of interest include the mechanisms of pathogenesis of secondary hyperparathyroidism, renal osteodystrophy, and vascular calcification in CKD patients. Recently, he has started to study the genetic polymorphisms of proteins involved in the molecular mechanisms of vascular calcification in CKD. He is involved in developing new treatments of secondary hyperparathyroidism and hyperphosphatemia in CKD patients. Over the past 20 years, he has acted as Principal Investigator for 10 international clinical trials on the treatment of hyperphosphatemia and secondary hyperparathyroidism in CKD and ESRD Patients.
He is author of 238 publications in peer-reviewed journals (total impact factor 623; citations 4606; H-index 34; i-10 index 108). He also serves as Associate Editor for “Plos One”, “Clinical Kidney Journal”, “Journal of Nephrology”, and “Blood Purification” and as a peer reviewer for 30 medical journals.

What are the targets and therapeutic best practices for the management of hyperphosphatemia?

Biography

Jorge Cannata-Andía is currently a Professor of Medicine and Director of the Bone Research Unit at the Instituto de Investigación del Principado de Asturias (IISPA), Hospital Universitario Central de Asturias, Universidad de Oviedo. He is also the President of the UEMS (European Union Medical Specialties) Renal Section and Boards and Past Chair of the Education Committee (CME) of the ERA-EDTA. The professor has also previously held the position of President and Secretary-Treasurer (2002-2008) of the ERA-EDTA.

Prof. Jorge B. Cannata-Andía’s research activities in bone metabolic disorders and vascular calcifications have attracted more than 30 Ministry of Health and Science sponsorships as Principal investigator and more than 30 research awards. He has contributed to medical literature with more than 400 original articles and editorials in peer-reviewed journals.

What is the impact of patient psychology on CKD management?

Biography

Steve Riley is a Nephrologist and the Dean of Medical Education at Cardiff University. As a Reader and Honorary Consultant in Wales, he has over 15 years of experience working in a busy tertiary referral Renal Unit. He has an interest in Chronic Kidney Disease - Mineral Bone Disease, particularly the factors that affect patient adherence to medication usage in the clinical environment and has published papers with a group from the Centre for Behavioural Medicine, University College London School of Pharmacy. He has been local lead for a number of clinical trials in Nephrology. More recently, he has been responsible for a major undergraduate medicine curriculum change at Cardiff University School of Medicine and he is interested in modernising medical education.
