Taking Action Against Asthma

Every individual with asthma should have an Asthma Action Plan. An action plan or management plan as it is often called, is a written plan that providers develop with their patients to help control their asthma.

The Asthma Action Plan shows patients their daily treatment plan, such as what kind of medication to take, as well as when and how to take it. The plan also describes how to control asthma long term, how to handle worsening symptoms or sudden attacks, and provides guidance when patients should call their physician or go to the emergency room.

Everyone involved in the patients’ care should be familiar with the plan, including: parents, guardians and caregivers (inclusive of babysitters, day-care centers and schools). By following an action plan, everyone can be prepared in case of an attack.
