Virtual Visits in Texas Now Include Video Consultations; Other Updates

As of July 1, virtual visits includes interactive audio/video (video) consultations in the state of Texas. This is in addition to the existing interactive audio (phone) consultations that were previously available. This change comes as a response to recent legislation passed in Texas.

Virtual visits is Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas’ telehealth solution that allows members to visit with a board-certified MDLIVE^® doctor via phone, computer or mobile app. There is an average wait time of 20 minutes.

This enhancement to the virtual visits benefit provides members with greater access to care that can be less costly than a visit to the emergency room and more convenient than waiting to see an urgent care clinician. Behavioral health* counselors are also available by appointment via secure video. MDLIVE also has the capability to consult with patients in Spanish and several other languages.

Other Updates

• Lawmakers in the state of Arkansas are considering legislation that may allow members access to virtual visits in Arkansas. More information is expected later this summer pending the final legislation; stay tuned.

• The cost of a virtual visit medical claim (CPT codes 99441-99444) will be increasing from $40 to $44 beginning Jan. 1, 2018, through the end of 2019. Please note that these claims fees are dependent upon provider contracting and subject to change. These medical rates continue to remain competitive and cost-effective channels of care. Note: Accounts with direct contracts with vendors such as MDLIVE are subject to the terms of their existing contract and may receive similar increases once their contract ends.
