Enhancing Workplace Wellness Is Key to Employees Making Healthy Decisions
Notes from Kevin Cassidy, SVP, on National Business Group on Health Conference

Recently Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) was a sponsor at Business Health Agenda 2014, a National Business Group on HealthSM conference. Held in Washington, D.C. from March 5-7, the meetings focused on “Best in Class Employer Solutions for a New Health Care Marketplace.”

I was fortunate to be asked to discuss the importance of health and wellness in today’s workforce along with our customers.

These companies emphasized that the commitment to wellness must come from the top. They also talked about how BCBSIL supports their company-sponsored health improvement wellness initiatives. Specifically, they mentioned programs that we provide and how they are critical components to the success of their employee health and wellness initiatives. These programs include:

  • Benefits Value Advisor (BVA) – This buy-up option is available to ASO groups with 250-plus subscribers. BVA offers quantifiable savings for employers and their employees. BVA guides members through the health care decision process, giving them the facts they need to make health care decisions. BVAs help members by providing options for lower-cost, high-quality in-network care. With just one call, a BVA can provide cost information, explain member benefits, let members know about available educational tools, and schedule appointments. BVAs document when they provide members with these options. That information is compared against members’ claims data to track savings.
  • Blue Care Connection® (BCC) – BCBSIL’s integrated health care management and wellness program focuses on identifying members earlier, before their health risk factors may lead to the development of chronic conditions, hospital admissions, readmissions or emergency room visits. BCC programs include: CCEI® Care Coordination and Early Intervention, Web-based coaching tools, expanded member outreach and lifestyle management programs. Our employer group customers shared testimonials on how health management programs have improved the health of their employees.
