June 2018

June Is Male Health Awareness Month

The purpose of Male Health Awareness Month is to increase awareness of preventable health problems among men and boys, and improve early detection and treatment of those health problems. Cardiovascular health, mental health, prostate health and cancer are a few topics to discuss with your male patients. For example, cardiovascular diseases are among the leading causes of death for men and women in the U.S. According to the Men’s Health Network, men are almost twice as likely to die from heart disease than women. Additionally, men are four times more likely to commit suicide than women as depression in men is often undiagnosed.

As a provider, what is your action? Begin early education with your male patients, and encourage them to schedule and attend their annual well checkups. Also, reach out to new members on your panel to schedule appointments. Teach and emphasize the importance of testicular self-exams, mental health education and preventive medical appointments.
