Well-child Visits Are Crucial in the First 15 Months of Life

One of the most important times in a child’s life is within the first 15 months. It is a vulnerable time of rapid development that presents opportunities for early detection of developmental delays and other disease processes. Because this is such a crucial time, it is important our shared members attend at least six well-child visits in their first 15 months of life.

Routine visits with your patients builds a trustworthy relationship between you, the child, and their parents or caregivers. These visits provide an opportunity to give anticipatory guidance and immunizations against many preventable diseases. Children need to have frequent visits to detect developmental delays, and receive guidance and referrals if needed. According to a study*, children with developmental delays who receive early intervention are more likely to graduate high school, hold a job, live independently, and avoid teen pregnancy, delinquency and violent crimes.

Outreach is important to ensure your patients are scheduling and attending their well-child visits. Encourage parents and caregivers to follow the recommended schedule for well-child visits and fully document the excellent care you provide. Increasing the number of visits within the first 15 months of life engages patients and families, provides educational opportunities, and increases health literacy, health outcomes and quality of care.
