November Wellness Communications—Heart Health

To assist employer groups in promoting wellness to employees, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) offers wellness communications campaigns using our turnkey wellness communications program, BlueResourceSM. These campaigns correlate with various upcoming national health observances, and the accompanying electronic files are available to all BCBSTX employers at no additional cost.

To share this campaign with your groups, simply cut and paste the information below into the body of an e-mail, then press send. It’s that simple! This month's wellness materials, ideal for a February campaign tied to American Heart Month, focus on heart disease.

Take Wellness to Heart
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States, and in 2009 heart disease is projected to cost more than $475 billion, including health care services, medications and lost productivity at work.*

Research shows that lowering high cholesterol and high blood pressure can reduce the risk of heart disease and premature death. Along with daily physical activity and tobacco cessation, following a heart-healthy eating plan can help achieve desirable blood cholesterol levels, normal blood pressure and healthy body weight.

Encourage your employees to reduce their heart disease risk by adopting healthier behaviors such as choosing nutritious, low-fat foods. Check out this month’s BlueResource files attached below. Use the communication tools to promote good nutrition and other preventive steps to help employees keep their cholesterol levels and blood pressure within normal ranges. Effective communications are essential in fostering a wellness culture and to improving health plan utilization, which helps reduce health care costs for everyone.
